CAMPHOR - Camphor trees are native to China and Japan and are cultivated for its wood for the extraction of camphor oil. Marco Polo was the first to note that the Chinese used camphor oil as a medicine, scent and embalming fluid. Camphor crystals have strong antiseptic, stimulant and antispasmodic properties and are applied externally as unguents or balms as a counter-irritant and analgesic liniment to relieve arthritic and rheumatic pains, neuralgia and back pain. It may also be applied to skin problems, such as cold sores and chilblains, and used as a chest rub for bronchitis and other chest infections. Antiseptic, antispasmodic, analgesic, expectorant.
CITRONELLA - As an insecticide, deodorant, tonic and stimulant. Cautions: Do not use during pregnancy, Do not use in high concentrations, and May irritate skin of some hypersensitive people, Not for internal use, If irritation occurs; discontinue use, Keep out of eyes.
EUCALYPTUS - (Eucalyptus globulus Australia) Eucalyptus is best known for its respiratory effects. It fights viruses and bacteria, while easing congestion. It also eases muscle and joint aches and pains. It stimulates circulation, increasing the flow of blood to affected areas. Eucalyptus can be mentally stimulating and may help increase concentration. Bergamot, blended with Eucalyptus, can reduce the discomfort of cold sores, herpes outbreaks, and shingles. The combination is reputed to be very effective against that specific virus.
GERANIUM - (Pelargonium graveolens)
A "woman's oil", geranium is believed by many to have a hormonal balancing effect and traditionally has been used to alleviate problems associated with menopause and menstruation. It also acts as a diuretic. It can lower blood sugar, and should be avoided if you are hypoglycemic. The word that comes to mind is "balance", especially for its emotional effects. It blends well with Clary, Rose, Sandalwood, Frankincense, Lavender, and Chamomile, among others. Some varieties are strongly rose scented.
GINGER - Rheumatism, Muscular Aches and Pains, Sprains, Broken Bones, Colds, Nausea, Diarrhea, Alcoholism, Digestive Disorders. Cautions: Do not use in high concentrations, May irritate skin of some hypersensitive people, Do not use in excessively hot or inflamed conditions, Not for internal use, If irritation occurs; discontinue use, Keep out of eyes.
LAVENDER - Lavender is said to be a natural antibiotic, antiseptic, antidepressant, sedative and detoxifier which promotes healing and prevents scarring and also stimulates the immune system and contributes to the healing process by stimulating the cells of a wound to regenerate more quickly. Aromatherapeutic Home Use -Burns, inflammation, cuts, wounds, eczema, dermatitis, fainting, headaches, influenza, insomnia, hysteria, migraine, nausea, nervous tension, infections, bacterial conditions, sores, ulcers, acne, boils, asthma, rheumatism, arthritis. ORANGE - From the rind of the fruit. Aids in depression, anxiety, constipation, nervous conditions, muscular spasm: As a tonic, sedative and antiseptic. Cautions: Keep out of sunlight while using citrus oils.
PATCHOULI - (Pogostemon patchouli) Patchouli, oil of the 60's is an effective anti-inflammatory for the skin, helpful in healing cracked or inflamed skin, acne, dermatitis and eczema. It is said to tone and tighten the skin, and is used in many anti-wrinkle blends. At the same time it helps regulate oily skin and dandruff. Some authorities say it is useful in appetite suppressant blends and, with its skin toning qualities, in combating cellulite. It is an excellent base note for perfume blends, and is generally considered an aphrodisiac. In small quantities it has a mildly sedative effect, while in large quantities it may be stimulating.
PEPPERMINT - Peppermint aids in the digestive, circulatory and respiratory. It is said to be an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic. Said to be a good oil to treat indigestion, flatulence, bad breath, flu, catarrh, varicose veins, headaches and migraines, skin irritations, rheumatism, toothache, fatigue and liver problems. Also said to keep mice, fleas and ants away too. Cautions: Do not use during pregnancy. May irritate skin of some hypersensitive people. Do not take when using homeopathic remedies. Do not use for more than a few days in a row. Avoid in cardiac fibrillation. Do not use with fever. Not suitable for Epileptics or children under six. Not for internal use, If irritation occurs, discontinue use. Keep out of eyes.
ROSEMARY - Rosemary is native to the Mediterranean region. Rosemary is a well-known and greatly valued herb that is native to southern Europe. It has been used since antiquity to improve and strengthen the memory. Rosemary leaves increase circulation, reduce headaches and have anti-bacterial and fungal properties. Rosemary improves food absorption by stimulating digestion, the liver, the intestinal tract, and the gallbladder. It also is used in antiseptic gargles for sore throats, gum problems and canker sores. Rosemary has a long-standing reputation as a tonic, invigorating herb, imparting a zest for life that is to some degree reflected in its distinctive aromatic taste. Tonic, stimulant, astringent, nervine, anti-inflammatory, carminative.
TEA TREE - Tea Tree antiseptic action is thought to be 100 times more powerful than carbolic acid and yet it is non-poisonous to humans. It is said to have anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. It is used in the treatment of candida and all sorts of infections, for ringworm, sunburn, acne, athlete's foot, toothache, and pyorrhea. THYME - Thyme is known as a powerful antiseptic and a general tonic, with healing powers. It is said to be used in cases of anemia, bronchial and intestinal disturbances. Thyme occurs in the west Mediterranean to the southwest Italy. The herb was known to the Sumerians, used by the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Thyme was praised by the herbalist Nicholas Culpeper (1616-1654) as "a notable strengthener of the lungs". Its main medicinal application is in treating coughs and clearing congestion. Many current formulas for mouth washes and vapor rubs contain thymol, one of the constituents found in thyme. It also improves digestion, destroys intestinal parasites and is an excellent antiseptic and tonic. Antiseptic, tonic, relieves muscle spasm, expectorant.
